Iván Peña of the Westerly Waves gave the Spinners a steady diet of fine pitches and he walked off the mound with a complete game shutout. He blanked them 1-0 on 2 hits with a total of 11 strikeouts and 1 walk.
The Westerly manager said, "Peña was on quite a roll. He gets great late movement and he doesn't give in to the hitters."
This year Peña has registered 3 wins and 8 losses in 15 starts with a 5.69 ERA while registering 56 strikeouts and 49 walks in 99.2 innings. |
 | Tuesday, June 13th, 2028: Chapa Torches Spinners for 5 Hits
What a day for Bernardo Chapa of the Westerly Waves! A 5-hit hitting spree! That doesn't happen everyday. He ripped Lowell pitching apart at Westerly Ballpark. He wrote his name in the record books, finishing up his special day 5-5. But the Spinners spoiled his party by winning the game 5-4.
The Westerly second baseman confessed, "I would have much preferred getting a couple of hits and winning the game to this. It's hard to enjoy anything when you lose."
His skipper said, "It's a shame that we couldn't have won the game. A guy gets a once-in-a-lifetime game and can't really enjoy it."
But he was upbeat enough to talk about his basic theory of hitting. "I'm usually a first ball hitter," Chapa told SION reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid that."
B. Chapa hit a solo-shot off C. Martínez in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This year Chapa has hit at a .302 clip with 73 hits, 2 home runs, 30 RBIs and 38 runs scored. |
 | Monday, June 12th, 2028: FL2 Player of the Week Named
Scott Johnson went on a week-long tirade against the League 2 pitchers and was acclaimed the Player of the Week.
The Toledo first baseman was hot as a firecracker, exploding with a .531 average, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs. For the week Johnson bashed out 17 hits in 32 at-bats and scored 10 runs.
His current batting average stands at .325 and he has chalked up 3 home runs and 30 RBIs. |
