Scrutiny begins early in the life of an amateur baseball player. Very likely it started while he was in high school. Scouts have traveled many miles to come up with a portfolio of players who have the potential to play in Mexican League. It all comes to fruition on rookie draft day. It's a crapshoot. Tijuana, Laguna, Mexico City, Yucatan and Minatitlan will have the first five cracks at hitting the jackpot this year. According to most baseball analysts, these 10 draftees are most likely to be chosen in the early rounds:
1. Armando Velázquez, 19 year-old second baseman out of college.
2. Armando Cruz, 19 year-old left fielder out of college.
3. Jorge Rojas, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
4. Alfredo Cerda, 21 year-old right fielder out of college.
5. Pedro Herrera, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
6. Luis García, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
7. Víctor Morales, 19 year-old first baseman out of college.
8. Cris Malfabón, 18 year-old first baseman out of high-school.
9. Carlos Rodríguez, 17 year-old shortstop out of high-school.
10. Juan Filgueira, 17 year-old right fielder out of high-school. |
 | Monday, June 12th, 2028: Rivera Earns MEX Player of the Week
Not every ball that came off Pepe Rivera's bat last week was a line drive or a towering shot -- it just seemed that way to the teams that played the Tijuana Colts. For his exploits, Rivera was named this week's Mexican League Player of the Week award.
The Tijuana catcher put up 10 hits in 17 at-bats and 2 home runs while hitting .588 with 5 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

 | Sunday, June 11th, 2028: Chihuahua's Burns Injured
A blow for Matt Burns today -- team doctors confirmed he will miss 7-8 weeks with a fractured hand. Burns suffered the injury colliding with a player at a base. Although officials from the Chihuahua Goldens are confident he'll make a full recovery, doubts will persist about Burns's ability to return fully fit with an injury of this nature.
So far in 2028 Burns has hit .318 with no home runs and 1 RBIs. He has played in 5 games and scored 5 times. |
